MONONA - Barbara Ann Pape (nee Samuelson) was born March 7, 1950, in Milwaukee, Wis., the daughter of Clarence Samuelson, MD, and Betty Ann (nee Halboth) RN. A big influence in her life was her maternal grandfather, the Reverend Arthur Halboth, who was pastor at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Wis., for over 50 years. He was a big supporter of Christian education and instrumental in starting Wisconsin Lutheran College. This inspired Barbara to teach 40 years in Lutheran schools mostly at the kindergarten level.

Barbara graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran High School in the top 10 of her class in 1968. Music was an important part of her high school life. She enjoyed playing piano, Bb and Eb clarinet, going on band trips, and making many good friends in the band.

She continued her education at Wisconsin Lutheran College graduating summa cum laude in 1970. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in Elementary Education in 1973.

Barbara and James “Jim” were united in marriage on Feb. 1, 1975, at St. Matthew's. Family has always been very important to her, so Jim and Barb were delighted when a son, Jeffrey, and a daughter, Bethany, were added to the family. Bethany (Schnabel) and son-in-law, David, have since blessed the family with two grandsons, Porter and Benett.

Also surviving are her sister, Betty Marie Samuelson; brother-in-law, Steve Tweedale, brother, Paul Samuelson; and numerous relatives on the Pape side.

Barb and Jim were members of Holy Cross for over 30 years where Barb was the kindergarten teacher from 1990 to 2015, active in Esther Circle, sang in the choir, played in the bell choir, and made many beautiful church banners.

In addition to teaching kindergarten Barb was a pharmacy tech at The Medicine Shoppe in Monona. If she had any "spare" time, she loved to cook, bake, read, and do needlecrafts.

After a brave battle against three different kinds of cancers, Barbara was taken home to heaven by Jesus, her Savior, on Sept. 12, 2024, at the age of 74. Blessed be her memory.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Holy Cross Lutheran School, 734 Holy Cross Way,

Madison, WI 53704 or Agrace Hospice Care, 5395 Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711. Many thanks to the support and loving care from the people at both places.

A special thanks to Dr. Diane Wendland whose care and concern went way beyond the normal and was outstanding.

A funeral service will be held at HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 734 Holy Cross Way, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024. Family and friends who wish to view the service via LIVESTREAM may visit Barbara’s obituary page at www.gundersonfh.com at the time of the service and click on "Watch Now" in the Webcast section. A visitation will be held at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Barb, You were a hard worker on the Compass staff.  You showed yourself to be a true patroness of the arts when you invited my band, the Unpaved Highway, to play at your 18th birthday party.  And you were often a loyal spectator at some of our sheepshead games at the WELS Campus House at UW-Milwaukee.  I look forward to seeing you again in the heavenly Kingdom that our Savior won for us, where cancer will be no more than a distant memory.  Mark Porinsky
